Best things to do in Venice with kids: Dorsoduro District

Every Venetian Sestiere has its own history and peculiarity. Last time we said something about San Marco; in this article we will give you suggestions and ideas for a few activities you can do with your children in the beautiful district of Dorsoduro.

  • A walk along Zattere: enjoy the stunning view on the Giudecca Canal while walking along the street. This is the perfect place to enjoy a moment of relaxation sitting in the sun and maybe having a gelato with your family.  Warning!!! Tell your kids about a wide opened mouth they need to find… it is one of the “mouths for reports” (also called “lion mouth”) that are all around the city. They were used to collect reports against people who threatened the health of “Osso Duro” district (this was the old name of Dorsoduro). This one in particular is located on the wall of the S. Maria della Visitazione curch, in Zattere.

  • Squero of San Trovaso: how is a gondola made and how do people build it? Here you can find out! It is, indeed, one of the few still active “squero” (places where gondolas are built) in Venice.

  • Campo Santa Margherita: in every “campo” (square) and “campiello” (small square) you can play football, go around on a kick scooter or invent new games with other children! Let your little ones try this authentic Venetian experience in one of the most lively and active squares! One more idea: take along some colourful chalk and set your imagination free!

  • Don’t miss the obligatory stop at the Tonolo pastry shop, one of the best in Venice! You can find it in Calle S. Pantalon, just a couple of minutes away from Campo Santa Margherita.
  • Visit the Peggy Guggenheim Collection: children and adults will be astonished in front of this extraordinary house-museum. Besides the permanent exhibition, you will find much more: you can visit temporary exhibits or you can sit under the gazebo in the courtyard and have a little break at the café. Moreover, if you book in advance you can participate with your children in the Sunday art workshop (for children aged between 4 and 10), every time different and unique!
